SECTION 1: IDENTIFICATION
This section identifies the chemical on the SDS as well as the recommended uses. Essential and required contact information can be found here. That information is:
- Product identifier used on the label
- Address
- Recommended use of the chemical
- Any other common names or synonyms by which the substance is known
- Phone number of the manufacturer, importer, or other responsible party
- Any restrictions on use
- Name
- Emergency phone number
SECTION 2: HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
This section identifies the hazards of the chemical presented on the SDS and the appropriate warning information associated with those hazards. That information is:
- The hazard classification of the chemical
- Pictograms
- Signal words
- Precautionary statement(s)
- Hazard statement(s)
- Description of any hazards not otherwise classified
*For a mixture that contains an ingredient(s) with unknown toxicity, a statement containing the percentage of each of the ingredients in the mixture.
SECTION 3: COMPOSITION/INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS
This section identifies the ingredient(s) contained in the product indicated on the SDS, including impurities and stabilizing additives. Included in this section are all information on mixtures, substances, and all chemicals where a trade secret is claimed.
Substances
- Chemical name
- Chemical name and synonyms
- Unique Identifiers (including CAS – Chemical Abstracts Service)
- Stabilizing additives and Impurities which can be classified as a chemical themselves
Mixtures
- All details necessary for each chemical in the mixture as listed in ‘Substances’
- A listing of all percentages of each chemical in the mixture
Trade Secret
- A statement with the specific chemical identity
- Exact concentration (%) of composition has been withheld as a trade secret
SECTION 4: FIRST AID MEASURES
This section details all first-aid care that should be administered both immediately after exposure and any specialized care that may be needed, including eye care, skin care, inhalation response, symptoms and effects, and medical recommendations for immediate and specialized medical treatment.
SECTION 5: FIRE-FIGHTING MEASURES
This section details fire fighting recommendations for the chemical presented on the SDS. The required recommendations consists of suitable extinguishing equipment that is appropriate and also the equipment that is not appropriate for a particular situation. Recommendations for any chemical hazards that come up during a fire, reactions created by the fire of the chemical, and any products or safety equipment that should be used in reaction to said hazards.
SECTION 6: ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
This section details what steps should be taken in the event that the chemical presented on the SDS is accidentally released into the environment. Including detailing response measures, cleanup practices, and recommendations to minimize exposure, this section details the level of response based on the volume of contamination.
SECTION 7: HANDLING AND STORAGE
This section details safe storage practices for the chemical presented on the SDS. Along with safe storage practices for the chemical this section also details precautions for safe handling, any chemicals deemed incompatible, practices to minimize environmental releases, and general hygiene advice.
SECTION 8: EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION
This section details minimizing worker exposure via personal protective equipment and procedures to prevent illness or injury from exposure. Safety exposure limits are established to provide workers with knowledge of the maximum amount of the chemical they should be exposed to as determined by several federal regulatory groups including OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs). Along with personal protection and exposure information use of recommended engineering controls and conditions.
SECTION 9: PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
This section details all of the physical and chemical properties for the chemical and/or mixture presented on the SDS. Only the relevant properties are listed here. The possible properties include but are not limited to:
- Appearance (physical state, color, etc)
- Evaporation rate
- Initial boiling point and boiling range
- Odor threshold
- Relative density
- Vapor density
- Auto-ignition temperature
- Flammability (solid, gas)
- Melting point / Freezing point
- Partition coefficient: n-octanol/water
- Solubility(ies)
- Vapor pressure
- Decomposition temperature
- Flash point
- Odor
- pH
- Upper/lower flammability or explosive limits
- Viscosity
